HCSO jail inmate collapses, dies
SEBRING -- A 49-year-old inmate collapsed and died at the Highlands County Jail today (June 24).
Pedro Jose Clemente-Haddock was exercising with other inmates in a recreation yard when he collapsed shortly before 1:34 p.m. Deputies and medical staff immediately responded and rendered aid, performing CPR as well as using an automated external defibrillator.
EMS arrived approximately five minutes after he collapsed and transported him to Highlands Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The entire event was captured on security cameras, and there were no altercations or any suspicious incidents before Clemente-Haddock collapsed. His death is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Unit. An official cause of death will be determined by the District 10 Medical Examiner.
Clemente-Haddock had been in jail since April 20 when he was arrested for violations of sexual offender registration requirements.
