The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office is comprised of sworn law enforcement detectives and civilian support staff with a wide range of investigative responsibilities. The unit is supervised by a Lieutenant and three Sergeants, each of whom have different areas of responsibility. The Criminal Investigations Unit partners with Heartland Crime Stoppers to generate leads and information in unsolved crimes.
Major Crimes: The Major Crimes detectives are assigned to investigate crimes against persons that occur within Highlands County. These crimes include robberies, homicides, kidnappings and abductions, and other serious violent crimes, as well as suspicious death investigations.
Property Crimes: Property Crimes detectives investigate crimes such as theft, burglary, identity theft, fraud, forgery, embezzlement, and computer crimes. The Property Crimes detectives are assigned to work in either the north or south districts to better identify crime trends within these regions. In addition to the detectives, a deputy sheriff specializing in agricultural crimes investigation is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
