School Resource/DARE/Academy/School Crossing Unit
School Resource Deputies provide prevention initiatives, intervention of crime, and the enforcement of law, with emphasis placed on juvenile issues within Highlands County. These functions are accomplished by the proper application of justice through the use of discretion, education, counseling, and enforcement when handling serious law violations. Provide law enforcement services on all school campus' in the unincorporated area. School Resource Deputies promote educational initiatives that aim at the prevention and intervention of crime for victims and offenders. They present the DARE curriculum in 6 public and 2 private elementary schools and 2 middle schools to promote alcohol, drug, and violence free lives. Further, School Resource Officer's cooperate to reduce out-of-school youth by assigning staff as drill instructors to the alternative to expulsion program "The Academy".
